Environmental Stewardship

“We have been transitioning to electric equipment, including mowers, blowers, and string trimmers. We also compost leaves and yard waste we remove to turn into healthy soil that we use all around campus. We have started a wildflower meadows program as well. These new wildflower banks are located in areas that would otherwise be mowed but unused. We use native species in our mix, and this helps to create safe places for small animals and to attract pollinators.”

Inclusion Efforts

At the center of Givens’ core values is the commitment to creating and sustaining an inclusive environment where everyone can feel a sense of belonging. We believe that diversity is a spectrum, and everyone has a value and place in the workplace. To further our efforts, Givens has taken steps to show our dedication to these beliefs.

In early 2024, Givens signed the AARP pledge which demonstrates that Givens affirms the value of experienced workers and commits to creating an organization that takes the necessary steps to back that up. This means that Givens believes in equal opportunity for all workers regardless of age, we recognize the value of experienced workers, Givens believes that all workers should have a level playing field in the workforce, and that we will recruit across diverse age groups & equally consider all applicants.

In May of 2024 Givens became a designated Recovery Friendly Workplace. This was just one more exciting step towards a wholly inclusive workplace. With this designation, Givens has shown and declared our commitment to break down stigma, connect staff with resources, and navigate the effects of substance use and recovery in the workplace.

Givens Communities is SAGE Care Certified. SAGE is a national advocacy & services organization that provides sensitivity training to our team members for elders in the LGBTQ+ community. All team members have gone through education and training, which occurs on an annual basis. Givens is an Emerald-level sponsor of the Blue Ridge Pride Association.

The organization has been a proud Platinum-level sponsor of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Association of Asheville and Buncombe County since 2018. This is a local association made up of individuals and organizations interested in preserving and advancing the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by promoting goodwill and mutual respect among all peoples.

It is our mission to create a safe space where every individual, team member or resident, can show up as their authentic selves.

Employee Spotlight

Carol Watson has been with Givens for over 40 years. What does she love most about her job? Carol says, "Managing payroll allows me to see our employees, and help as I can. I just love it when the numbers work. Accounts Payable and General Ledger analysis make me happy when it all balances. Sometimes it’s a mystery hunt for the solution which I enjoy as well."

Outside of work, Carol met her husband of 39 years, Dennis, when she was 16-years-old. These high school sweethearts enjoy ATV 4 wheeling trips to WV, KY, TN and hopefully more future destinations, including Moab, UT.

Mario Miranda has been a long-time Dining Team member for 17 years. He loves the people at Givens and especially the residents. He helps by putting away deliveries, performing a variety of tasks in the kitchen, and serving residents meals in the Lodge at Givens Highland Farms. Team members describe him as honest, kind, strong, and determined.

Mario has a great positive attitude, and he is always smiling. He is an inspiration to many at Givens and we are fortunate to have him as a vital part of our community.
